Hate Crime in the US

Disclaimer: This site was built from scratch in early 2012. As internet things go, the libraries it depends on and/or their versions used (Modest Maps 1.0.0, jQuery 1.7.1) are either outdated or no longer maintained. User experience will vary depending on screen size (best viewed on a large screen).

About: The first map-based website ("map microsite") that I built from scratch, as a personal project. Displays hate crime data in the United States biennially from 2004 to 2010 including total incidents reported, aggregated by state, with each state’s incident total broken down by bias (race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability). Also displays the total number of agencies that track and report hate crime incidents, aggregated by state, and the corresponding state population. While the map’s content was, admittedly, secondary to its technical assembly at the time of creation, its intended purpose is to communicate the distribution of hate crimes in the US while exposing states that invest minimally in hate crime reporting (i.e., states with a large population and/or large number of incidents and a small number of reporting agencies).

Process: Data processing and storage with SQLite. Web design with vanilla HTML/CSS. Map design with TileMill and interactivity with Modest Maps and jQuery.
